The IFoA’s General Insurance Research and Thought Leadership Sub-committee is seeking expressions of interest to join this working party. Lay members (non IFoA members) are also welcome.
Climate change continues to be an issue of increasing societal importance and presents many issues for actuaries.
In 2022, the IFoA established the General Insurance Climate Change Reserving Working Party. Its aim was to equip reserving actuaries with resources with which to discharge their professional responsibilities in respect of climate change and participate meaningfully in conversations on this topic. The output of this working party, including its 2023 Brian Hey prize-winning paper, are available on its VLE page.
From 2025, the working party has been reformed as the General Insurance Climate Change Working Party, with its remit extended to cover all aspects of climate change affecting the work of general insurance actuaries. In light of the significantly widened terms of reference, the reformed working party is recruiting for new members to help to implement its 2025 work plan.

As the working party has to date focused on reserving, we are particularly interested in general insurance practitioners with experience and industry connections outside reserving. For example in pricing and underwriting, capital modelling and risk management, including in relation to non-insurance risks, exposure management, investments and asset management, and outwards reinsurance and reinsurance security.
The time commitment is approximately half a day to one day per month, made up of regular meetings of the working party and reading related research in between. We expect some key stages to be busier than others, where the commitment may involve concentrated effort such as drafting reports and presentations.
Meetings usually take place between 9.00 and 10.00 UK time on alternate Tuesday mornings.
Meetings will be held online, with the opportunity to join in person if desired. There is no requirement to meet face to face in any particular location.
