MapAction – volunteer opportunity

MapAction is looking for actuaries to help provide expertise to humanitarian situations to greatly improve outcomes for the people affected, in this exciting and unique volunteering opportunity.

This opportunity allows you to contribute your time and expertise to support MapAction’s mission. Please note, it does not involve volunteering for international deployments or attending events on behalf of MapAction.

MapAction is a non-profit organisation collaborating with partners around the world to prepare for and respond to humanitarian emergencies. It strives to ensure global, regional, national and local disaster management and humanitarian agencies have access to the maps, visualised data, information and analysis that they need to make key decisions, at the right times, to save lives and reduce suffering.

What is involved

The aim is to support team members in evaluating and enhancing MapAction’s professional development within the humanitarian sector, particularly in areas requiring technical expertise. This includes:

  • facilitating open discussions on learning and development progress, focusing on technical and strategic growth.
  • web development with a background in marketing skills.
  • assisting team members in identifying specific areas for growth in data analytics, risk modelling, and geospatial data application.
  • providing insights into how technical skills, such as data visualisation, predictive analysis, or insurance risk management, can be applied to MapAction’s humanitarian projects.
  • recommending additional learning opportunities or activities tailored to those with technical or insurance backgrounds, including training on humanitarian information standards.
  • offering follow-up guidance to ensure the team member’s continued development and successful integration of new skills into their role.

Desired skills and experience

To support effectively, you should have:

  • professional background in technical data fields such as data analysis, geospatial information systems (GIS), insurance modelling, or risk management.
  • experience in applying technical expertise in real-world scenarios, ideally within the humanitarian or disaster risk reduction sectors.
  • strong analytical and communication skills to help team members link technical skills with operational goals.
